Whore on Melrose
Whore on Melrose

I saw a whore on Melrose Avenue,
standing like a paper flower
in the sunlight,
standing so cool
in the noon's heat.

I could not see her eyes,
but felt the space she saw,
that shadowy place beyond light,
where she could walk
with impunity, and dance
to music that sang out
from all the windows,
and fell on all the streets there.
