We stayed a week in a place called Ayr on the south-west coast of Scotland. We were booked into Butlin's Holiday Park - rather down-market, but lots of amusements for Cameron, which were all free once we had paid the initial weekly charge.
The accommodation was a chalet - rather tatty but clean. Amongst other things, we visited the cottage in Alloway near Ayr wher e the famous Scottish poet Robert Burns was born. They've provided a small but very well organised museum, which contains many examples of his letters, first draughts, and memorabilia. He was only 37 when he died!
It rained all the week other than for one day when the clouds departed and the air was crisp and cool. The faraway hills on the offshore islands were tinged with pink from the first rays of the returned sun, and the birds were singing their joy at the cessation of the rain. No other music was necessary. There was a feeling of peace and a oneness with nature. That strange dumpling of a rocky island Ailsa Craig shimmered in the distance like Bali Hai.
