I know that this is not a question that anyone asked me, but I just thought that I would air my thoughts on the subject. I don't like the idea of Koreans or other foreigners adopting an English name, unless it is very important to them, or it has some significant family connection, importance, or imperative. For example if they had been married to an American, or they were working for a Western firm and the westerners couldn't pronounce the foreign name, or they thought that their Korean name sounded ugly to Europeans (which in general most Korean or Asian names do not!) I would never dream of changing my name to Lee Yang-chou, Wang Im - ky, or Kim Yo - han - or even Kim IL - sung if I lived in Korea.
Sadly, my Korean studies are going very slowly. It would be a lot easier if there was a college teaching Korean that I could attend to learn - but there's not. I am totally dependent on my book and my cassettes. The trouble with this method is that I get easily distracted. I spend a lot of time with the baby, and he needs watching continually. He is at the age when he is pulling open all the drawers and throwing all the contents over the floor. In addition, I have my clients to look after and my work to do - so I am progressing very slowly. Now it takes me a long time to read words in the Hangul lettering, and I've not even looked at Korean grammar yet! |
