54  Eton Street, Walton, Liverpool. 1993

A friend of mine called Tom O'Brien who still lives in Liverpool recently saw this photograph in the 'Liverpool Echo' and he cut it out and sent it to me.
It is of the street where I was born and grew up and where I lived until the age of twenty-three.

The photograph was obviously shot from the window of the Entertainment Suite of the EVERTON FOOTBALL CLUB, where the manager Joe Kelly used to have his office in the immediate post-war days.

I remember  that a childhood friend of mine named Nicky Cusack once threw the pillow from his sister Josie's doll's-pram up towards this  window about 30 feet above - on the sill of this very window through which you are  now cybernetically, vicariously peeping-through.   It lodged on Kelly's window-ledge and remained there as a visible reminder of our youth for twenty-three years!

Now - at this moment in time - as you lean forwards towards your computer-screen,  can you sense the sodden  pillow just below you on the sill? It's just out of sight below the bottom of your screen.

Can you FEEL what it must have FELT like to have been raised in a  street like the one you see below?
